Período Azul

by Mané Pacheco
2018 | HD Video | Portugal | 11:45 min. | no sound

A non-chronological revisiting of iconic works by the 'great masters of art' (from the 20th century to the present day) centred on the colour blue as the starting point for the narrative that (literally) unfolds on a roll of paper. It is turned/drawn/turned successively, in a mise en abîme movement that materially reproduces the immaterial loop of the image. The construction of iconic (and ironic) images is initially done using the traditional tools of drawing and painting, later replaced by domestic/intimate objects, culminating in a suggestive masturbation. The loop remodels the meaning of actions and objects. The mirror effect between the loop and its reflection underlines the (systematic) repetition of a (systemic) tendency in significant moments of transition in Western art, signalling the constant in substituted and substituting conventions. The page always comes back blank: ready to be rewritten.

Mané Pacheco has a degree in Multimedia Art (specialising in Performance and Installation) and was awarded the 2009/10 University of Lisbon Merit Scholarship and the 2010 BPI/FBAUL prize. She also has a degree in Environmental Health and a postgraduate qualification in Urban Design and Public Art. This background continues to be a major influence on her work, where she explores the relationship between man and the environment, often invoking sexuality from a physiological/biological and sociological point of view.
